What Are Those Tube Socks?
“When I see tube socks in the mirror, I’ll think about pulling the trigger.” That’s what a woman we know told us recently when we were discussing cosmetic surgery. If you’re of a certain age, or you’ve had multiple pregnancies or gained and lost weight, you may know what she’s talking about: making the choice to have breast lift surgery (also called mastopexy).
The Impact of Saggy Breasts
Whether you think of them as tube socks, deflated balloons or granny boobs, saggy breasts can make you appear older than you are. And if you’ve always thought that going under the knife is not for you, consider this: a breast lift in New York with us has at least the potential to do for your body what a facelift can do for your face. It’s true! Droopy breasts not only affect your appearance from the front, but from the side as well.
Take a 90° turn in the mirror and see what we mean. Now imagine your breasts restored to a perky position. And picture yourself in a youthful, form-fitting top. That’s not all—perhaps your posture has improved a bit and there’s a big smile on your face. Those are the benefits we aim to deliver for our New York breast lift patients.
A Customized Procedure
We tailor each surgical plan to the precise needs of the women we work with. There are three basic approaches: the “inverted T,” the “lollipop” and the peri-areolar lift. We will discuss the merits of each one in your consultation, but generally the biggest factor is the size of your breasts. You can learn more about the incision options here.
The options for customization don’t stop there. For moms whose breasts seem deflated after childbearing, we can place an appropriate-sized implant as we lift up the saggy skin. Some patients whose skin has stretched due to overly large breasts ask us to reduce their size while we lift and trim skin. While you’re on the operating table, we can also use the liposuction cannula strategically, to eliminate love handles, a small belly pooch or even bra rolls in back. We have also performed mastopexy in New York in combination with other procedures—just tell us what interests you.
Your Investment
Breast lift surgery may be more do-able than you think. We start with twilight anesthesia for most women, meaning you will wake up quickly and completely after the procedure with no general anesthesia “hangover.” Surgery will take three to four hours, depending on the strategy we’ve designed. You’ll recover for a short time under our observation, then go home the same day.
We advise most women to take about a week away from work and most activities. You can add light work, gentle walking and so on within a few days. More strenuous activities need to wait to be added gradually for at least a couple of weeks.
We will let you know what to expect during the initial post-op period. Bruising and swelling are normal, as well as mild to moderate discomfort. You can use prescription medication or Tylenol to help out, as well as cool compresses. We try to avoid placing drains when possible, but you may need them for a day or two.
Your breasts will ride higher on your chest for a time after surgery. You can wear loose tops at first to disguise this effect. They will settle into place over several days to a few weeks. If you’re like most women, you’ll be delighted with your new shape, even when your breasts are not quite yet in position. After all, you’ve endured years of droop!
