Eyes on New York: Eyelid Lifts and More!
At our cosmetic surgery practice in New York, eyelid surgery is one of the favorite procedures we perform for our patients. We’re interested in other ways people try to enhance and rejuvenate their eyes as well, so we tend to be on the lookout for new ideas people are exploring. Here’s some of what we uncovered lately.
Lash Lift
Perhaps the latest and quirkiest eye enhancement we’ve seen is called a lash lift. We read about it in an online tabloid based in Australia, and it seems to be a combination eyelash curling and tinting procedure. Over about an hour’s time, two types of perming solution and a tint are painted on the upper lashes. The results the article’s author achieved seem noticeable but moderate to us. Were they worth the $130 price tag? She was pleased and content to pay that price for eight weeks of curlier, darker lashes.
One thing we do wonder, though, is whether the mixtures painted on the lashes are safe. If they are anything like solutions used to perm and color hair, we would not want them around our eyes.
Eyelid Strips
Though they have been used in Asia for years, eyelid strips have only recently gained in popularity in the U.S. Along with people seeking the look of a “double eyelid,” some older women give them a try to temporarily lift the upper lids, though it can be challenging to get the strips positioned right.
Strips can be fun to try for special occasions, though they don’t open up tired looking eyes as effectively as eyelid surgery. And, for New York patients who ask us, we caution against frequent use. Because skin around the eyes is ultra delicate, it is easy to irritate it and even cause tears.
Filler Options and Wrinkle Treatment
For the right patient, fillers like Juvederm and Restylane can help rejuvenate a specific area: tear troughs that run vertically next to the bridge of the nose. When patients are bothered by a hollow, dark look under the eyes, fillers can restore a more youthful appearance. What’s new nowadays is that fat transfer is also an option for some people.
If the problem is wrinkles around the eyes due to repeated muscle action, Botox or Dysport could be a good choice. Typical targets are crow’s feet and the “elevens” between the eyebrows. New injectables that also calm overactive muscles are introduced from time to time, and we evaluate them when they gain FDA approval. So far, Botox and Dysport are still our favorites.
Why We Are Fans of Eyelid Surgery
As long as people keep safety in mind, there’s nothing wrong with trying various options for enhancing the appearance of the eyes. Creams and spa treatments can freshen up the area somewhat, and even old standbys like cucumber slices and cool, wet tea bags can at least feel soothing.
For those who truly want to open up their eyes—most often men and women starting to notice signs of aging, but some Asian patients seeking subtle change as well—there’s no better alternative than eyelid surgery. It’s less expensive than most other forms of cosmetic surgery, it poses little discomfort, recovery time is not long and for most people the results last a lifetime.
We perform eyelid surgery in New York with confidence, given more than thirty years’ experience. We know just how to safely create a bright, alert, youthful appearance—no cat eyes, no look of permanent surprise.
