Plastic Surgery for Men: A New York Perspective
One of the professional groups we belong to, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), recently published an article outlining things men need to know about plastic surgery. The piece made some great points! Due to thirty years of expertise in male breast reduction, we’ve become a go-to practice for general plastic surgery for men in New York. We’d like to elaborate on what ASPS article had to say.
Here are the five assertions the article made, along with some observations.
Cosmetic procedures are tailored differently for men and women.
The ASPS explained that not only are the bodies of men different than women, requiring a distinct set of techniques, also the features of each sex tend to have their own look. Let us give examples of what we mean.
One procedure that tends to be handled differently for men is liposuction. It’s obvious that male bodies most often accumulate fat deposits in different places than women’s bodies; what may not be so obvious is that the tissue itself is denser. Therefore when we perform liposuction for men, we need to be more aggressive with our instruments to do the job right.
Eyelid surgery, which is very popular with both sexes, is another example. Whereas women look best with all redundant skin removed and wrinkles smoothed, men look more masculine if the area around the eyes is not completely taut. Read more about eyelid surgery for men here.
Electing plastic surgery does not mean you can give up working out.
In our years of performing plastic surgery for men in New York, we find most guys are aware that surgery is not a substitute for a good diet and exercise regimen. In fact, they often work like crazy trying to banish unwanted fat deposits before concluding that it’s just not possible to get rid of some on their own. Often we find that following liposuction or a tummy tuck, men are inspired to build on the boost we give their appearance and return to the gym with renewed enthusiasm.
It’s important to rest after plastic surgery.
It’s not unusual for male patients to view themselves as extra tough and ready for activity before it’s advisable, and some guys have strenuous jobs they want to return to as soon as possible. We understand all that, so we make sure our patients plan for appropriate downtime and know about the risks of jumping the gun.
The ASPS warns of “undoing” the benefits of a procedure if a patient doesn’t rest. In our experience that kind of outcome is very rare. But it’s not rare for a guy to suffer extra swelling from too much activity too soon, causing a setback for a day or two. That’s why we take extra time to prepare each patient for a smooth, uneventful recovery.
Noninvasive options aren’t just for women.
The ASPS article makes the point that some men aren’t ready to shoulder the recovery time necessary for a surgical procedure, nor the cost. What we tell appropriate male candidates is that noninvasive techniques aren’t just for women, and a little fine-tuning can help a great deal with confidence.
In fact, annual statistics published by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, another professional society we belong to, show that more than 650,000 men elected injectable treatment last year. Men come see us for Botox and fillers just like women do.
Men should choose a plastic surgeon wisely.
Selecting a talented, reputable, board certified plastic surgeon is critical for anyone considering cosmetic surgery. When a guy decides to investigate his options, it’s vital for him to locate a physician who has worked with hundreds or even thousands of male patients. That’s the only way to ensure the surgeon has the experience to understand and treat the subtle but important differences between the sexes.
Just about every plastic surgery practice across the country welcomes men as well as women. But here in Manhattan, we’re a bit unique. Unlike other practices, we don’t just offer plastic surgery for men in New York; guys make up nearly 50% of our patient base! That’s much more than the average cosmetic surgery office.
What that means to you is that we have an extensive track record working with guys. We know that they sometimes feel hesitant to even consider cosmetic surgery, they often don’t want others to find about their procedure(s), and that they anticipate an improved appearance but they want to look completely natural.
