3 Secrets for a Successful Liposuction Re-do
As you probably know by now, achieving good results with cosmetic surgery the second time around can be challenging. It’s as true for liposuction as it is for other procedures.
By working with dozens of patients seeking revision liposuction in New York each year, we’ve come up with three top secrets for success we can share with you. Of course we welcome you to come in for a consultation with us in Manhattan—whether you drive in, cab it or fly in. But if you’re unable to come see us, here are some tips you should consider.
1) Be prepared to invest in developing your strategy.
It’s possible you did not achieve outcome you were hoping for the first time because you skimped on some aspect of preparing for surgery. If you chose a low-cost provider, for instance, you need to be prepared to spend a bit more to work with an experienced liposuction expert for your revision.
You will also want to invest some extra time getting ready for a re-do. We strongly suggest you plan more than one consultation so you can compare what a variety of plastic surgeons have to say about your case. You may still decide to work with your first surgeon on the revision, but it will be easier to know that’s a good choice if you receive input from others.
2) Choose your plastic surgeon very carefully.
Removing fat with suction may sound like a fairly straightforward task, but the truth is that achieving smooth, natural looking contours is not easy. Unfortunately, it IS relatively easy for a physician to get in the business of performing liposuction. Some doctors with minimal cosmetic surgery experience take a weekend course and declare themselves open for liposuction patients. It’s important to know the difference between a board certified plastic surgeon with expertise in body contouring and a doctor from another field who happens to offer liposuction.
Ensure that your prospective plastic surgeon is highly skilled in liposuction and corrective liposuction. You can look for evidence that he or she performs liposuction in conjunction with procedures of the body, breasts and face. Ask about the instruments and particular techniques they favor and why. Request to see before and after liposuction photos. Find out if your plastic surgeon is called upon by the media as an expert, teaches courses, or if three’s other evidence that they are highly regarded for their skill.
3) Understand the results you can expect.
You should know that results of corrective liposuction may not be “perfect,” and a trustworthy plastic surgeon should tell you so. For one thing, scar tissue will make maneuvering under the skin more difficult the second time around. And irregular contours—whether they’re hills, valleys, lumps or shelves, can be tricky to smooth out. Your plastic surgeon should be skilled in relocating fat as needed to help fill in trouble spots.
Realistic expectations are one key to satisfaction with liposuction revision. Although you may not declare the outcome “perfect,” if you select the right plastic surgeon, your results should be much improved.
One of the reasons we perform so much corrective liposuction in New York is that we have been in practice for more than three decades. Not only that, we had the opportunity to learn from pioneers in the field and refine our instruments and techniques over thirty years of working with both women and men. If you’d like to talk with us about your case, we would be pleased to hear from you.
