Does Your Nose Tip Off Your Personality?
It’s said you only get one chance to make a good impression—and some people believe your nose is actually in charge of what others first think about you.
According to American Spa, an online publication for medical spa professionals, when you meet someone new, your nose gives important hints about what you’re like. A recent article reported that several common nose shapes are linked to personality traits in today’s pop-culture oriented society.
See if you agree with these generalizations:
The Roman Nose
A strong nose with an outward curve is considered a classic Roman nose. It’s also referred to as aquiline, or “eagle like,” as the curve resembles the shape of an eagle’s beak. A Roman nose is considered to be the mark of a leader. Most are said to be thoughtful in their decisions, while some are perceived to be over-confident. Wikipedia mentions Alexander the Great and King David as leaders with aquiline noses.
The Greek Nose
A long, straight nose is often called a Greek nose. Perhaps because this shape is attributed to many of the ancient Greeks, people who have this type of nose are generally thought to be intelligent and logical. Ironically, the Greek nose seems to be relatively rare in the flesh—Angelina Jolie being one example—yet readily found in some of the world’s most famous art treasures such as Michelangelo’s David and da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.
The Upturned Nose
An upturned nose is one that’s concave in the middle with a tip that turns up so you can see a portion of the nostrils. Says American Spa, people with noses like this are believed to be optimistic, fun-loving and social. The article cites Marilyn Monroe and Christina Applegate as prime examples of celebrities with perky, upturned noses.
The Small Nose
Also called a snub nose, a small nose often indicates both quick-thinking and fast reactions, according to American Spa. The article claims this explains why so many professional athletes have small noses, such as Muhammad Ali. Others with classic small or snub noses include Elizabeth Taylor and Miley Cyrus.
The Crooked Nose
A crooked nose is usually the result of an injury, but not always. Occasionally people are born with a nose that’s not straight. When an asymmetrical nose includes a deviated septum, surgery may be needed to clear the airways. For some men, a crooked nose lends sex appeal—think of Patrick Dempsey, Ashton Kutcher and Tom Cruise. People with crooked noses are said to have fun-loving, carefree personalities.
Whether you subscribe to these generalizations or not, one thing is certainly true about noses: extreme cases often send people to see a plastic surgeon. In our practice in New York, rhinoplasty candidates with pronounced Roman noses often refer to the shape as “hooked” or “beaked.” And whereas some women aspire to have a slightly upturned nose like Kate Middleton, a patient with a nose that turns up sharply may see it as a “pig nose.”
Occupying the center of the face as it does, a troublesome nose can challenge the confidence and self-esteem. Fortunately, rhinoplasty is one of the oldest and most popular forms of plastic surgery, and many talented plastic surgeons are available to help. Nearly 150,000 patients elect nose jobs each year. If your nose sports a hump, bump or bulge that bothers you, a consultation with an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon is a step you should consider.
