Planning Eyelid Surgery? Be Flexible!
When you visit a plastic surgery practice anywhere in the country—including ours here in New York—for eyelid surgery information, be prepared to listen carefully and be flexible. What you may not know is that there are several different “tools” for rejuvenating the eye area, and the right combination for you could be quite different than the plan for someone else.
In fact, you may be interested in an eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, and discover you need a completely different procedure! Here are some of the rejuvenation techniques available:
Upper eyelid lift: Your plastic surgeon will make tiny incisions along the fold of your eyelids and remove excess skin to open up tired looking eyes.
Lower eyelid lift: Through incisions just under the lash line, your plastic surgeon will remove excess fat and skin and lift drooping tissues.
Brow lift: Don’t be surprised if your surgeon recommends a brow lift instead of or along with your eyelid surgery. Descending forehead skin is often a leading factor behind droopy upper eyes, and if it is not addressed properly blepharoplasty alone will not yield a natural look.
Fat transfer: It is very common for a patient to benefit from some fat repositioning to fill hollows created by the passage of time. For some people, eyelid surgery results are markedly enhanced by fat transfer at the same time.
BOTOX® Cosmetic and fillers: Your plastic surgeon may recommend Botox for temporarily weakening frown lines and/or a dermal filler for plumping wrinkles in strategic locations. These products can be used to enhance surgical results or postpone a more invasive procedure.
This ever-expanding array of techniques and products is one reason it’s so important to select your plastic surgeon with care. Be sure to find a board certified plastic surgeon or facial plastic surgeon who has vast experience with all these tools—that’s the only way to ensure you don’t get a “cookie cutter” recommendation.
As a bonus, when you choose a plastic surgeon with years of facial rejuvenation experience, you may find you even get more out of your procedure than you imagined. For instance, our New York eyelid surgery patients are pleased to learn that we can use the incisions under their lower lashes to elevate drooping cheek tissues in a “mid facelift.”
