Rhinoplasty: A Favorite Challenge
Because rhinoplasty is consistently one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures, and since it is also one of the oldest known forms of plastic surgery, you might think it’s one of the easier procedures for plastic surgeons to perform. Not so! In fact, when patients consult us about rhinoplasty in New York, we make sure they understand what a delicate operation it is.
No matter where you’re planning to have a nose job, the most important step is to find an experienced, board certified plastic surgeon who truly enjoys performing the procedure. He or she should have hundreds, if not thousands, of nose jobs to their credit and should be able to demonstrate:
A deep appreciation for the aesthetics of the face. This means that your post-op nose won’t just be without humps and other excess tissue, but that it will harmonize with the rest of your face as well.
The skill to manipulate very small amounts of tissue. As the centerpiece of your face, tiny fractions of change in skin, bone and cartilage can make a big difference in your overall appearance. Your surgeon needs to be part artist to get it right.
Experience with broken noses and breathing issues. While most nose jobs are done for cosmetic reasons, some people require internal structures to be modified as well. Be sure your surgeon can handle whatever treatment your nose requires.
The experience and sensitivity to work with people of all kinds. Today, most people want a nose that looks attractive without obliterating every trace of their ethnic heritage. Your plastic surgeon should have experience with people from a variety of racial backgrounds.
An acceptable revision rate. No surgeon will make 100% of rhinoplasty patients happy, but your plastic surgeon’s revision rate should be relatively low. It’s a bonus if your surgeon is chosen to perform revision rhinoplasty on patients who originally had a nose job elsewhere.
One easy way to get a sense of a plastic surgeon’s track record is to view his or her before and after rhinoplasty photo gallery. You should see a wide variety of “before” situations including nasal humps, wide nostrils, bulbous tips, crooked bridges and so on. The “after” pictures should show noses looking refined and natural.
