The Facelift You May Not Know About
No, we are not talking about one of those procedures with a catchy name and a big marketing campaign. In our practice in New York, a facelift we call a “mid facelift” is often a good option for men and women in their 40’s and 50’s who are experiencing early signs of aging. The mid facelift can be a great choice for people who want to move beyond what non-invasive treatment can do but who aren’t candidates for traditional facelift surgery.
How is a Mid Facelift Different?
A mid facelift is very different than a traditional facelift. For one thing, the incisions are positioned just below the lower eyelids instead of in front of and behind the ears. The skin is then lifted upward, rather than outward. Excess skin and fat bags around the eyes are eliminated; therefore the tissues covering the cheekbones enhance their curves and give a youthful appearance. We can also reposition fat as needed to fill hollows.
What Are the Advantages?
The most obvious advantages of the mid facelift include reduced downtime and lower cost than most other facelift procedures. But there are additional benefits as well. Since skin and muscle are lifted upward, we easily avoid the artificial, “cat like” appearance some facelift patients fear. The procedure also addresses aging of the lower eyelids, while softening the entire mid cheek area and smoothing nasolabial folds. This is often exactly what middle-aged patients need to regain a youthful appearance. Last but not least, scars are small and well hidden under the lash line.
Why Don’t More Plastic Surgeons Offer Mid Facelifts?
The skin and underlying tissues around the eyes are quite fragile. With good reason, many plastic surgeons hesitate to perform a variety of procedures around the eyes. It takes a sure hand and the skills and confidence that come with many years of experience to know what can and can’t be done in this delicate area.
The mid facelift is a very specialized procedure we have been performing with great results for decades. But we are one of the only practices to offer this option.
Would a Mid Facelift Work for Me?
Position your index fingers on your cheekbone below the outer corner of your eyes. Lift upward—vertically—and see if wrinkles between your nose and mouth look smoother and your skin sags much less. If so, a mid facelift could be a good choice.
